Here are some of the more frequently asked questions and worries about Osteopathic treatments...
........................................................
Can osteopathy help with...?
Osteopathy can help an enormous range of conditions. It is best to contact us
and speak directly to an osteopath if you are unsure if your condition can be treated.
Will treatment hurt?
Occasionally some discomfort is felt when tight tissues release and let go of their tension.
We use gentle, specific techniques to minimise the risk of pain or adverse reactions.
Occasionally some discomfort can be felt after treatment, but we will discuss post-treatment
self help to minimise this.
What should I wear?
Generally, it is advisable to wear comfortable stretchy clothing that can easily show the
problem area. We may ask you to remove tight clothing such as jeans, but will provide
blankets to cover you. Cycling or gym shorts and a sports bra or vest are ideal.
Can I bring a chaperone?
Yes of course you are welcome to bring a companion.
If the patient is under 16 they will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Should I tell my doctor that I am seeing an osteopath?
It is not necessary to tell your doctor, as osteopaths are primary healthcare practitioners.
We may wish to request details of any test results from your GP, or refer you for further investigation, but will always obtain your permission before doing so.
Will I be treated on my first visit?
The initial consultation aims to find out what is wrong, and based on that we will decide if
osteopathic treatment will be safe and appropriate. Providing there are no contraindications,
you will be treated on your first visit.
How many sessions will I need?
This is very variable and depends on the nature and severity of your condition, and we will
have a better idea after an initial consultation. Some complaints are resolved in as little as
one or two sessions. Others may need more treatment especially if it is a long term, chronic
complaint. We will never ask you to sign up for x amount of sessions.
